History
Pre-Novel History:
Daniel was born in California a few years after his parents moved to the States from Ukraine, long enough for them to have become official citizens. While he was growing up, his parents regularly spoke Ukrainian (and a bit of Russian), so he started learning those languages from a young age.
When he was three, his mother was fatally injured during a robbery at the pharmacy where she worked. Though she was rushed to the hospital, she ultimately passed from her injuries. This left Daniel to be raised solely by his father, who ultimately never re-married.
His magical gifts began showing themselves at a young age, as well, and his father did his best to start teaching him about magic and witches.
Shortly after beginning elementary school, Daniel met and befriended a boy his age, Iliya. They bonded quickly as they were the only two Slavic kids in their class, and they were aware of these facts through maybe rollcall or like, little introductions the teachers made them do about themselves.
A few weeks after this, Daniel's father, Mr Valkanov, the Bellamys, Ms Song, and the Albescus met, after Mr Kravchenko sent out a sort of magickal calling card, designed for witches without a coven. This was about two years after he lost his wife, but he was still grieving and lonely, and thought having the support and social network of a coven might be good for him--and them, too. They were all understandably a bit cautious, some of them more hopeful than others, like Mr Valkanov who missed being in a coven like he'd been in Bulgaria, but in the end they came to an agreement. They would form a coven, look out for and protect each other and their children, share magickal knowledge, etc. and so forth.
Sometime shortly after they solidified these vows, probably in some sort of binding magickal way, they all gather at one of their houses, it's not super important whose, and bring their children with them to introduce them all. Obviously, Iliya and Daniel recognize each other and are delighted that not only are they friends, but now they know they have magic in common and that's super cool to them. Iliya is also excited to meet the other boys; Evan, Jung-Ho, and Sebastian. None of them had ever met another witch before, aside from their own parents, so they were thrilled to meet others like them, people they shared magical abilities with.
Now that they all know each other, Iliya is able to spend time with Daniel outside of school. During one of these times, Iliya was playing over at Daniel's house one day when he fell out of a tree and banged up his knee. Daniel, concerned for his friend, healed his scraped knee with magic without a second thought; healing magic has always come easily for him, even at such a young age.
Daniel and the other boys began hanging out together often, usually at the house of whoever was available on that particular day to keep an eye on them. Their families were supportive of their friendship and would tell them age appropriate things about magic is any of the boys asked. Otherwise, the boys did their own thing, playing with and practicing their magic, becoming closer and better friends. As the months and years went by, the boys made a pact of their own to keep each other's secrets, to always be there for each other, and to protect each other. Essentially, they made their own tiny coven, though not yet as proper and official as the one their parents had created.
Daniel began helping his father with working on Mr Kravchenko's various cars, of which he had a few since he was a car enthusiast. This turned into a frequent thing, with his father teaching him various things about automotive care.
For Evan's 11th birthday, the group went mini-golfing with a bunch of other kids from school, aka Evan's 'casual' friends. One of the boys started picking on Iliya because he wasn't actually any good at mini-golf. Daniel became aware of this and stood up for Iliya, chasing the other boy off.
When Daniel was a freshman at Redview Academy, a prestigious high school, a couple of boys cornered him to pick on and harass him for not having a mother in his life. No, they didn't know what happened to his mom but honestly, it wouldn't have made a difference. They insulted him and his father, flinging both racist and homophobic slurs at Daniel. Iliya ended up stumbling across this incident and got into a horrible fight with the boys. All of them were suspended for the fight, though Daniel's suspension was shorter than the others, and either way he was incredibly grateful to Iliya for standing up for him.
When Iliya began sneaking weed from his father, who was growing it both before and after it became legal in California, Daniel (and Sebastian) accepted when he offered. It became a routine thing for the three of them.
For Daniel's 16th birthday, his father surprised him with a car; a (yellow) Ford Focus ST.
Starting shortly before he turned 17, Daniel had a small handful of relationships, the first to test the waters and realize/come to terms with the fact he's gay, and the following relationships to explore things he was interested in and try to figure out what sort of person he was interested in. The relationships were mostly short-lived not because of Daniel but because of the boys he ended up dating, who either ended up using him to get what they wanted or realized they actually weren't that attracted to other boys.
After turning 18, he got his full driver's license.
